Dear Reformed, We Have A Prosperity Gospel Too!

May 13, 2026

Summary

What if a softer form of the prosperity gospel has been hiding in faithful churches? In this conversation, Jon Moffitt explains how believers can quietly assume that obedience should produce comfort, stability, or an easier life. When suffering comes, that expectation often leads to confusion, disappointment, and questions about God’s goodness. You will hear why this mindset resembles a subtle version of the prosperity gospel, even in conservative circles. The discussion points to a biblical understanding of suffering, faithfulness, and the Christian life. The goal is to bring relief and hope to weary believers who are asking why life feels so hard.

Everybody hates the prosperity gospel.

00:00:03

If you're a conservative, reformed, Calvinistic, man, it's so damaging.

00:00:07

But I would argue there is a lighter version, a softer version of the prosperity gospel, and it actually lives in the conservative, evangelical, Calvinistic Reformed churches at times.

00:00:19

And I wouldn't explain what that means because there's sometimes people wake up and they look at their life.

00:00:24

They've lived for Jesus, they're disciplined, they're reading the Bible, they're praying, and yet their life is absolutely falling apart.

00:00:32

Why is God allowing this to happen?

00:00:34

That's the question we always ask.

00:00:36

And believe it or not, you're believing in a prosperity, Gospel, light.

00:00:40

If you're in the midst of suffering and you're hurting and you're struggling, this episode is for you.

00:00:45

There's hope for you.

00:00:46

There's an answer to your question of why is this happening?

00:00:49

And I want you to hear it because it will bring you relief.

00:00:52

Stay tuned.

00:00:55

Ever read the Bible and walk away feeling like you're failing?

00:00:58

No matter how hard you try, you're never measuring up.

00:01:01

That's not a motivation problem, that's a reading problem.

00:01:04

Most people have never been taught how to read the Bible the way Jesus taught it.

00:01:08

So when they hear things like, be perfect, deny yourself, take up your cross, they assume it's all about trying harder.

00:01:15

But what if that's not what Jesus was doing at all?

00:01:18

What if the law isn't meant to fix you, but to reveal your need for a savior?
