An Introduction To Covenant Theology

In this course, we are going to explore Covenant Theology. We will show you how Covenant Theology provides a framework for rightly reading and understanding your Bible that arises from scripture itself. We’ll dive deeply into the three covenants that comprise this framework: the Covenant of Redemption, the Covenant of Works, and the Covenant of Grace. In the end, we will rejoice over the firm ground Covenant Theology provides for our assurance and rest in Christ.

Part 1: Introduction & Overview

In this first session, we are doing a big picture overview of Covenant Theology. We discuss how Covenant Theology serves as a biblical framework for understanding scripture, give an overview of the three major covenants that form that framework, and explain why a covenantal understanding of scripture is so important for our everyday life as Christians.

Part 2: The Covenant of Redemption

In this session, we will focus on the Covenant of Redemption. We see how the Covenant arises from the pages of scripture. We will see what this covenant is, who is involved in it, and what role each plays- and how it sets a framework for us to be able to understand the Covenants of Works and Grace. Lastly, we will look at how understanding the Covenant of Redemption affects us practically by shaping our understanding of God, serving as grounds for our assurance, and shaping how we read our Bible.

Part 3: The Covenant of Works

In this session, we explore the Covenant of Works. We begin by explaining the Covenant itself- its parties, obligations, promises, and sanctions. We get into the connection between the Covenant of Works and federal headship, and how we are saved by works- the works of Jesus. Lastly, we discuss how these realities crush our self-righteousness and help to rightly value all that is gifted to us in Christ.

Part 4: The Covenant of Grace in the Old Testament

This is our first of two sessions discussing the Covenant of Grace. In this session, we talk about the nature of the Covenant of Grace. Then we turn our focus on the promises and progressive revelation of the Covenant of Grace and trace them through the Old Testament, from Genesis to Malachi.

Part 5: The Covenant of Grace in the New Testament

In our final session, we pick up where we left off on the Covenant of Grace. After seeing how the Covenant of Grace was promised and revealed in the Old Testament, we now see it established and inaugurated in the New. We discuss why the Covenant of Grace is indeed a new covenant, in contrast to the old covenant. We walk through and show how everything in the Old Testament finds its fulfillment in Jesus, and how that reality gives us solid ground for rest and assurance.
