FROM HERE TO THERE is a retrospective of church history. It’s what we call an archaeology of the present. We will begin in the present moment and move backwards to examine all the people, movements, philosophies and events that led to the current state of affairs in the evangelical church. As we take a critical look backwards we’ll be more able to understand the present. In this first module, we’re asking ourselves “How did we become who we are as evangelicals and what features and people and events and theological emphases have led to who we are?”

We’ll go back and examine the first and second great awakenings and look at the massive impact that revivalism has had on the evangelical church. Will also take a critical look at the influence of American social-political perspective on American religion. When we put all of these features together will have a better answer to the question “What is an evangelical and how did we get to where we are theologically?” When I asked what is an evangelical most people can’t answer despite the fact they identify as an evangelical. FROM HERE TO THER is an attempt to answer that question objectively and to discover the influences that led to evangelicalism.

Session One – Evangelicalism & The Gospel

In session one we will lay out our objectives and aims for the course. We’ll also frame the course with a definition of evangelicalism. Finding a consistent definition for evangelicalism is notoriously difficult given the nature of the movement.

Session Two – Defining Evangelicalism

In session two we will begin to trace the historic development of evangelicalism from its earliest influences up unto the Great Revivals of the eighteenth century. We will also look at the permanent impact “revivalism” has had on the American Church.

Session Three – Tracing Evangelicalism‘s Development Part One

In session three we will look at the relationship between the early republic and the rise of evangelicalism. We will hope to prove the innumerable ways “American” has been infused into the “Christian” of evangelicalism; at some points, the two are indistinguishable from one another.

Session Four – Tracing Evangelicalism‘s Development Part Two

We will examine the larger impact of our evangelical ethos on the American church. We’ll think through the broad characteristics of our religious practice, trace their origins and demonstrate the existence in the present moment.

Session Five – Observing the Impact of American Evangelicalism

We will finish our examination of the impact of evangelical theology on the modern American church (marketing, individualism, hyper-spirituality) and bring our course to a close with series of present observations and predictions for the future.

  1. 5 out of 5

I am not 100% completed with this educational series, but it is fantastic. As someone who had never went to seminary, I’m an accountant, it’s great to have a college level course at reasonable price. It’s actually free for Total Access Members.

Thanks Byron and the Boys for your dedication to Reformed Theology and building up the Church.

  2. 4 out of 5

Glad this is part of my Total Access Membership. Blessed to work through these issues in my own ministry.

  3. 5 out of 5

Excellent series. Informative and relevant for evangelicals today.

What we see today really makes sense once you listen to this series. Very pleased to have gotten the Total Access Membership.

Can’t wait for the upcoming content! Thank y’all so much!

  4. 5 out of 5

This has really helped me get my head around where we’ve gone wrong in the Evangelical world. Very much worth the price of admission. My world view has been changing for a while now, but at the moment I think the ground under my feet is moving a little.

  5. 5 out of 5

Excellent series – great idea to begin with a “look at history backwards” perspective. I learned a lot and there are several pull quotes from each session to use as reminders for key points. Byron kept the series honest and interesting as well as informative. Many folks I speak with don’t have or give much thought to why they attend the church they do and this series could help a lot of people begin to flesh out the why and what they believe if they listened to this series.

  6. 5 out of 5

This series is very helpful and informative. Starting with where we are and then looking backwards at the influences that brought evangelicalism to this point is enlightening. The impact that pietism and revivalism have had on evangelicalism is significant and far reaching. As you listen to this series, you see these streams influencing our beliefs and practices today. It is an excellent opportunity to examine where we have been and where we are going.

Thank you for making the series available through Total Access. I am looking forward to more classes.
